South Bay Hospital Surgeon First in Florida to Use Hybrid Bypass Graft
June 13, 2011
Sun City Center, Florida - South Bay Hospital surgeon, Dr. Howard Hermans, was the first in Florida to use a new hybrid graft technology to perform femoral bypass surgery. During the quick procedure, Dr. Hermans implanted a hybrid bypass graft in the leg of a woman suffering from peripheral arterial disease (PAD), causing her to have lower leg pain. The manufacturer of the new graft, Gore Medical, Inc., confirmed that South Bay Hospital was the first in Florida for this surgery.
In this new technology, two devices are combined: a traditional graft and a stent. The stent is attached to the graft at one end and the device is used to perform bypass surgery to increase blood flow. The use of the new hybrid technology saved the patient from having to undergo a much larger and more invasive procedure. According to Dr. Hermans, “this new hybrid graft will improve the longevity of the graft and minimize the amount of surgery required for any patients that are going to need bypass surgery.”
Bypass surgery is often used to treat patients who are suffering from peripheral arterial disease. This disease is caused by the narrowing or blockage of arteries that carry blood to the arms or legs. Common symptoms of peripheral arterial disease include leg pain, numbness, change in color of the limb, and diminished hair and nail growth in the legs and feet. South Bay Hospital offers free PAD screenings at the South Bay Hospital Outpatient Diagnostic and Rehab Center located on 4051 Upper Creek Drive, Suite 103, Sun City Center, FL.
