Sun City Center, Florida - South Bay Hospital is pleased to announce it is now offering a minimally invasive procedure to repair Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms. Endovascular Stent Grafting enables physicians to treat these aneurysms through a much smaller incision with the assistance of X-ray. For patients, this means a quicker recovery and less scarring.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms is a defect where the large blood vessel supplying blood to the abdomen, pelvis and legs protrudes outward or bulges at a weak location in the abdomen. This can be life-threatening if the vessel ruptures.
Most Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms produce no symptoms unless there is pressure on surrounding tissue causing pain. Diagnosis is usually determined through a physical exam and tests such as Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) or Computerized Tomography (CT). Once diagnosed, patients may be referred to a vascular specialist like Mark J. Alkire, MD, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon and Reynaldo Mulingtapang, MD, Interventional Cardiologist who together will repair the aneurysms with the endovascular stent grafting procedure.
Unlike open surgery which involves making a long cut in your abdomen, this procedure requires only two small incisions in the area of your groin, producing less scarring and quicker recovery time. The physician inserts the stent through the blood vessels using a thin, flexible catheter. “This minimally invasive procedure is an excellent alternative to open surgery, which traditionally requires a lengthy hospital stay,” says Dr. Alkire. “With stenting, patients can go home the next day, with success rates well over 90 percent.”
Endovascular stent grafting procedures is just one of the many advanced procedures now available at South Bay Hospital, an Accredited Chest Pain Center and Joint Commission Certified Advanced Primary Stroke Center.
